Intro

Success does not always come easily or problem-free. You will face many challenges as you move through life. Today, Dr. Esi Thompson Tani-Eshun shares her tips with us in regards to academic success.

Guest Bio

Dr. Esi Thompson Tani-Eshun is a professor at Indiana University, where she teaches Public Relations. She says her life calling is “to take care of my family, friends and loved ones, and my spiritual calling is to live for my King.”

Q:  How Did You Practically Thrive During Challenging Times?

  1. Lean on God. For Dr. Esi, prayer is her outlet. When she was frustrated and overwhelmed, she would call out to God. But once she got it all out, there was relief and peace that would come and say, “You will get it done.”

  1. Have a support system. Dr. Esi said her husband helped her the most while she was in school. He would take care of their baby and help her personally when she was struggling. For others, having close friends or other family around to help support you through emotional challenges is very important. Even if they cannot practically help you, sharing your struggles with others is vital to success.

Q: Why Didn’t You Quit When You Were Struggling?

Part of the answer for Dr. Esi is simply this: something inside of her was determined to finish what she had started. One of her friends told her, “You’re not going back to Ghana empty-handed.” The other part was a spiritual drive. Dr. Esi felt that the sequence of events to get into the program had the hand of God in it, and if God was guiding her, He would help her succeed.

Q:  Why Do You Give Credit to God and Not Your Own Work?

While some people may credit fate or the universe, most people know that things happen in our lives that we cannot control. For Dr. Esi, it is not fortune or luck that determines those things: it is a Person. Her faith is in God and in His Son, Jesus Christ. Her life experience, coupled with the Word of God, has led her to that conclusion.

Q: What is Your Closing Advice for The Thriving Generation?

Associating with other people. It is important to learn from those who have gone before you. Not just those who only share the positives. Learning from those who have failed and those who talk about their failures is key. Our journey will not be all glorious, but neither was anyone else’s. Do not let that stop you from thriving.
