The Journey Towards Identifying Your True Self & Capabilities

Intro

With all the discussion about finding your true self and doing what you love, there is an obvious question to ask: How do you know what you value or enjoy? What can you do to figure that out for yourself? Today, Veronica Safoa Owusu (aka the Gold Dust Queen) joins us to talk about her journey to becoming a mindset coach.

Q: How would you define coaching?

Coaching is about bringing the best of others to the surface. It is the ability to unlock your potential so that you can be the best version of yourself. I want to help other people find their pathway, identify their limitations, and pave the way forward to achieve their goals.

Q: How did you come across your career path?

What I do today wasn’t planned. It wasn’t even something I knew existed when I was a child. I remember when I was 16 years old, and my mother was a teacher, sitting in the back of her classroom and waiting for her to be done so we could go. However, one of those times, I watched how she was able to hypnotize a class of 30 children and to see how inspired they were by my mother. That was when I realized what I wanted to do; I wanted to inspire and empower others.

Later in life, after I had tried to start a business (for all the wrong reasons) and it collapsed, I found myself wonder, “Is this what I want my life to be?” It was at that time that I came across an online workshop from Coaching Academy UK. It just happened to show up in my Facebook feed, and I clicked on it. I ended up enrolling with the group and becoming a coach.

Q: How do we identify our goals?

You start from yourself. People don’t want to take the time to find who they are. It is much simpler to find other people you admire and try to copy what they do, but that does not work long-term. You need to take the time to discover who you are and discover what your values and goals are.

A good question to start asking yourself is, “What are the high and low moments of my personal story?” When were you the most happy or content or excited in your life. What were you doing during that time. That is a good way to find out what your unconscious values may be. When were you the most miserable? Whatever was going on at that time is something you may need to avoid in your future.

There are times when you need a coach, too. Learning from others shouldn’t be your default in your self-discovery journey, but that can be a helpful tool when used correctly.

Q: What are some of things you would change, looking back on your journey?

Don’t live up to somebody else’s expectation of what you should or shouldn’t be. That was my biggest mistake. Sometimes we can end up following what other people want us to do or want us to become. You find yourself doing things that are not in line with who you are and it leaves you feeling empty. Identify what it is that you want and believe in yourself enough to pursue them.

Summary

In the end, it takes time and effort to discover who you are and what you value. You cannot take shortcuts and hope to succeed. Other people may have advice or guidance for you, but you cannot just copy other people’s lives and expect the same results. Take the time to reflect on your values and find out what you enjoy doing. And keep persevering through the struggles. Your breakdown may turn out to be your breakthrough.
