Life Changing Lessons from Steve Jobs’s Story on Death

Intro

As you move through life, you will encounter stories that can change your perspective on life. These can be big moments, a conversation you have with a friend, or a video you watch. Today, we will discuss Steve Jobs’ talk on death (Stanford 2005) and look at some key points he makes in this talk.

Point 1: Do Not Be Afraid of Death

We will all die someday; there is nothing that we can do to change that. Why fear what we know is coming? Focus on the life you have now and get the best out of it. If you are afraid of death, what is causing that fear? Steve Jobs puts it this way: “Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.” Being wealthy or healthy will not prevent you from dying, so do not spend your whole life focusing on those things.

Point 2: Reflect On Your Life And On What Can Be Improved

“If today was the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? If the answer is “no” too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” If you knew how much time you had left on Earth, what would you want to do with your remaining time? What can you do today to change your “no” answer to a “yes?”

Point 3: Love, Respect and Cherish Others

If someone in your life was to leave this world, what would you want to tell them before they left? Are you giving them all you can right now? Are you loving them, respecting them, letting them know that you care for them? During funerals, people often share how much the deceased meant to them. Why would we wait until they cannot hear us to tell them those things?

Point 4: Life For Yourself & Life Your Best!

When you wake up in the morning, do not just “make it through” the day. Live the best life that you can. Your relationships, your finances, your work goals; do them all the best way you are able. “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” Do not try and life someone else’s life or follow their definition of success. Chart your own path to a thriving life!
